JROTC
The JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) Program at Hancock Middle Senior High School is a leadership and citizenship program designed to help students build confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. It incorporates values and principles from military service into the classroom. The focus is on developing strong leaders for any career path.

JROTC brings principles and values of military service into the classroom. The focus is on developing strong leaders for any career path. Students will develop skills in building confidence, working as part of a team, and thinking critically to solve problems. They will learn the values of leadership, service, and citizenship.
JROTC INSTRUCTORS
The program is taught by highly qualified retired military instructors certified by the U.S. Army Cadet Command and approved by WCPS. These instructors are dedicated educators and mentors who focus on leadership, citizenship, and personal development.
COURSE schedule & CONTENT
JROTC is a multi-course program that follows the newest set of curriculum standards. The program includes four courses, with the final two offered as semester classes so students can complete the full sequence in three years. JROTC students still take English, math, science, history, and electives like any other student. Throughout the program, students develop essential skills in leadership, communication, teamwork, discipline, and ethical decision-making. Students will also participate in:
- Leadership projects
- Team challenges
- Physical fitness activities
- Community service events
POTENTIAL CERTIFICATIONS OR CREDENTIALS
JROTC students can earn industry-recognized credentials that boost college and job applications, including:
- FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate
- CPR/First Aid for First Responders
PATHWAYS AFTER GRADUATION
JROTC builds leadership, discipline, and teamwork, qualities that strengthen college applications, scholarships, and career readiness in any field. There is NO military service is required. However, students who choose to pursue ROTC programs or military scholarships after high school may have a competitive advantage.

For Students Coming to Hancock
ELIGIBLE STUDENTS
All current 8th–10th graders in Washington County Public Schools are eligible to apply. Students who are scheduled to attend a high school other than Hancock must submit an application to be considered for the program. Students currently enrolled at Hancock do not need to apply; they will have the opportunity to add JROTC to their schedule during their spring meeting with their counselor.
TRANSPORTATION
Transportation is provided for all students accepted into the JROTC program, even if they live outside Hancock’s attendance area. Parents or guardians are responsible for dropping off and picking up their students at their home high schools each day. Students will be picked up from their home high school on a WCPS bus each morning and transported to South Hagerstown High School, where they will transfer to a bus going to Hancock Middle Senior High School. If a student stays after school at Hancock to participate in sports, clubs, or other activities, parents are responsible for transporting the student home from Hancock.
STUDENT LIFE
As a Hancock student, JROTC cadets can join any sports team, music ensemble, or club. JROTC also helps students build time management skills to balance your activities successfully.
Hancock’s staff, students, and JROTC instructors are welcoming and supportive. Students will have guidance and mentoring to help them adjust and succeed.
